Intense pulsed light therapy is a common dermatology treatment, which can be used to treat issues such as rosacea, sun damage, and acne scarring. As a treatment for dry eye, it is a groundbreaking approach. With IPL technology, light pulses penetrate the tissue and create heat, targeting the abnormal vessels that are the root cause of the inflammation associated with dry eye. The body ’s natural reaction to the treatment removes the abnormal vessels and heals the inflammation threatening the skin and eyelid. IPL technology treats your skin and eyelid inflammation while potentially improving overall skin appearance.
What Can I Expect?
Through pulses of light, IPL therapy liquefies and releases hardened oils that are clogging the meibomian glands. We will place shields over your eyes to protect them from the pulses of light, and a layer of cooling gel is applied to the treatment area. A small device is used to apply the light pulses.
After the treatment, the oil is expressed from the glands, thus restoring oil flow to normality and allowing the glands to work properly again. The procedure is quick and performed in our office. Skin and eyelid inflammation can be relieved with as few as 1-2 treatment. Typically 4 sessions with 3-4 weeks in between are needed to achieve optimal results.
Am I a Candidate?
If you suffer from dry eye — dry, red, or fatigued eyes — then you may be a candidate for IPL therapy. IPL therapy offers a more permanent solution than some of the alternative treatments to dry eye. If you’re tired of using eye drops for a temporary solution to the problem, call us today to learn if you’re a candidate for IPL therapy.
